Regents approve changes to U-M­D plans

The Board of Regents has approved revisions in renovation and expansion plans for buildings at the U-M­Dearborn campus.

The Dec. 2 vote was part of a process that may allow the University to acquire the Ford Training and Development Center for the Dearborn campus. The regents approved reductions in the scope of previously announced renovation and expansion projects in the Engineering Laboratory Building and the Science Building on the Dearborn campus.

In June 2001, the regents approved projects totaling $35 million to renovate and expand the two buildings that were part of the Dearborn campus when it opened in 1959. The revision approved last week will reduce the cost of those two projects to $22.2 million.

Seventy-five percent of the total project cost will be paid for by the state, with 25 percent coming from University funds, primarily through long-term borrowing.

Earlier this year, U-M­Dearborn received approval from the state to amend its capital outlay request from the original $35 million approved in 2001 to $55 million, to allow for the potential purchase of the Ford Training and Development Center in Dearborn.

Officials from the Dearborn campus are involved in negotiations with representatives of Ford Motor Co. to purchase the facility on Hubbard Drive.

U-M­Dearborn was established in 1959 with a gift of 200 acres of land and $6 million from the Ford Motor Co.
