Crime alert issued for home invasion
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued a crime alert (#2002-23)
Oct. 4 for a home invasion in Markley Hall. A resident reported
that she awoke about 6:30 a.m. that day to find an unknown man in
her room tampering with her television set. He left the room without
further incident once he realized she was awake. He is described
as a white male about 18 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150
pounds with a thin build, and short light brown or blonde hair with
gel. He had no facial hair or glasses, and was wearing a red polo
shirt, possibly blue jeans and a silver watch. Anyone with information
is asked to call DPS at (734) 763-1131.
Attempted robbery at Church carport
An employee reported to DPS Sept. 12 that he had been approached
in the Church carport around 4:50 p.m. by an unknown man who asked
him how much money he had and claimed to have a gun. The suspect
fled without showing a gun or taking any of the employee's possessions.
The suspect is described in DPS crime alert #2002-22 as a Black
male, 18-23 years old, 6 feet 3 inches-6 feet 5 inches
tall. He was wearing a hat with a black skull cap, diamond earrings,
a long-sleeved white shirt and dark jeans. Anyone with information
is asked to call DPS at (734) 763-1131.
Indecent exposures at Arb continue
DPS is investigating two reports of indecent exposure, Sept. 17
and Oct. 11, in the Nichols Arboretum. The suspect description in
both reports is similar to several received last year. DPS officers
are looking for a white male, 40-45 years old, 6 feet 1 inch-6
feet 3 inches, 150-160 pounds, with a thin build and short
gray hair. Anyone with information is asked to call DPS at (734)
763-1131, and anyone who sees a man at the Arb matching this description
is asked to call DPS immediately from an emergency blue-top phone,
or to call 911 and indicate they are calling from the U-M campus
so the call will be transferred to DPS.
Officer catches suspected drug dealer
A DPS officer recognized two men sleeping in the Michigan
Union computing site Sept. 23 as non-affiliates who were trespassing
on University property. While arresting one of the men for trespass,
the second man attempted to flee, reportedly threw under a table
some material that later was determined to be cocaine, and was caught
by the police officer before leaving the area.
Delano Bowden, 18, of Ann Arbor, pleaded guilty Sept. 25
to possession of cocaine with intent to deliver less than 50 grams.
A second charge of resisting and obstructing a police officer was
dismissed. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 28.
Two vehicles reported stolen
A hospital employee reported her 2001 silver Ford Expedition
stolen Sept. 25 from the M22 carport. DPS officers found glass pieces
in the cement where it had been parked. On Sept. 19, a family housing
resident reported his 1997 white Ford Econoline van stolen from
lot NW45 at 1600 McIntyre Dr.
Two sexual conduct complaints reported
DPS officers are investigating two unrelated complaints from University
employees of inappropriate touching, or criminal sexual conduct
fourth degree. Both incidents, at the Michigan League Sept. 15 and
the Ruthven Museum Sept. 26, involved other University employees.
New water dispenser catches fire
A newly installed water dispenser caught fire Sept. 17 in the Administrative
Services building. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the building
was evacuated for about one hour as fire personnel and staff from
Occupational Safety and Environmental Health cleared smoke from
the area. 3 101 The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center
(SAPAC) supplies reports to inform the University community about
incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking that
are reported to SAPAC.
