Symposium opens opportunities for business community

Entrepalooza 2002: The Foundation of Future Business will be held Sept. 13 in Hale Auditorium. The half-day public symposium will provide members of the business community with the opportunity to learn from leading entrepreneurial experts and to network with business executives, students and members of the community. The program will feature keynote speakers Michael Jandernoa, chairman of the board for Perrigo Company, and Ravi Mohan, general partner of Battery Ventures. The award for alumni entrepreneur of the year will be presented.

President Coleman to visit U-M–Flint

U-M President Mary Sue Coleman will make her first visit to the U-M–Flint campus Sept. 16. Coleman will spend the day touring the facilities and talking with students, faculty and staff.

Rackham seeks grant and fellowship applications

The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies is accepting applications for its 2002 faculty research grants and fellowships program. Faculty members may apply for a grant, a fellowship or both to assist junior faculty in establishing and sustaining an active program of research and scholarship. Consideration also is given to senior faculty members who are undertaking a new line of inquiry. The deadline for applications is Oct. 14.

Three groups offer brown bag presentations

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, Mediation Services and Work/Life Resources Center are offering 14 brown-bag educational presentations for the 2002-03 academic year. The 45-minute presentations are free of charge and are available to any unit or faculty or staff group upon request. Among the classes offered this year: creative thinking, handling confrontation and conflict, lifestyle changes to increase energy and health, understanding conflict, talking with elderly relatives about difficult issues and controlling your clutter.

Humanities Institute mini-grants

The Institute for the Humanities has announced the continuation of its mini-grant funding program for the current academic year. The grants range from $1,000 to $1,500 and are available to all U-M faculty and graduate students. The mini-grants support a variety of initiatives in the humanities and the arts, including books for reading groups, cost of conferences and special needs for artists and filmmakers.

Business School jumps two notches

The U-M Business School is now rated No. 2 in the world by corporate recruiters, according to the 2003 Wall Street Journal Guide to the Top Business Schools released today (Sept. 9). The Business School also ranks first among public schools and in the Midwest, and is the No. 1 source for recruiting minority talent. Several of the school’s programs rank in the Top 10, as well, including marketing, operations management, general management, accounting, strategy and finance.

attributes in the Wall Street Journal survey, including student communication and interpersonal skills, student leadership potential and ability to work in teams, past success in hiring top-quality graduates, the MBA curriculum, the faculty, and the career-services office.

Telephone products now at M-Stores

Beginning this month, U-M departments now have the option to purchase basic telephone products through M-Stores. The M-Stores online catalog (http://www.mstores.umich.edu/catalog/computer/telephones) and ordering system list several office telephone sets and accessories. All telephone products are available through ITCom using a service order form. ITCom will continue to provide support for products purchased through M-Stores or ITCom.

Learn Web site strategy and tactics

The Yaffe Center’s second annual Web Site Strategy and Tactics Workshop will be held 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in room D1270 of Davidson Hall. The workshop features speakers from Accenture, Diamond Bullet, Enlighten, Fry Multimedia, Ford, GM, GLTG, Leo Burnett, Pfizer, Proctor and Gamble, TecEd and Whirlpool, in addition to U-M faculty.

The registration deadline is Sept. 12.

UMHS hosts urology conference

The U-M Health System is hosting a conference on urology and clinical practice from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Sept. 13 at the North Campus Holiday Inn. The conference is designed for health care professionals who work with adult patients with urological disorders.

Funding opportunities available

Two Cancer Center funding opportunities are now available through the John and Suzanne Munn Endowment. Research grants are available for senior investigators who are taking a new direction in their cancer-related research, or for those involved in innovative collaborations between scientists. The fund is available to faculty in any unit of the University.

IDEA grants are available for investigators of any level who have novel and innovative ideas for cancer research.

M-Fit hosts 5K run/walk

M-Fit, the U-M Health System Promotion Division, is hosting its sixth annual 5K run and walk at 8 a.m. Sept. 14. The event, which benefits the American Heart Association, will be held at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Discounts for U-M employees are available, along with event t-shirts, prizes, food and more.

UMHS shuttle routes change

Beginning Sept. 3, the U-M Medical Center shuttle bus system made improvements in its route system. The changes are designed to shorten commute times and increase mid-day frequency of service from North Campus and other northeast Ann Arbor buildings. The affected routes are: the Hayward-Hubbard route, the Mitchell-Glazier route and the UMHS Intercampus route.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens sale

An array of antique bulbs, native grasses, colorful mums and other products are available for purchase at the Annual Fall Gardener’s Sale, Sept. 13–15 at the U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens. A members-only night is planned for Sept. 13 between

3–7 p.m., with a 10 percent discount available to members of the Friends of Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Memberships are available at the door. The sale is open to the public 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Sept. 14–15.

Cancer Center offers support group

The U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering a free, eight-week support and discussion group for adults who have lost a parent to cancer. The Without Our Parents group meets 6:30–8:30 p.m. every Tuesday from Sept. 24–Nov. 12. Attendance is requested at all sessions, which are held at the Nichols Arboretum Urban Environmental Education Center. Register by Sept. 13.

Music festival for North Campus

The 3rd annual North Campus Musical Festival will be held noon–10 p.m. Sept. 19. The festival features continuous performances at the Pierpont Commons Courtyard, Leonardo’s cafe and the piano lounge of the Pierpont Commons. The festival features an eclectic mix of music from the 12 local and national acts performing.

Yakusho films featured this month

The Center for Japanese Studies presents a film series featuring the work of Koji Yakusho, one of Japan’s most popular leading men. The series will be held every Friday at 7 p.m. from Sept. 20–Nov. 22. Movies include, “Shall We Dance?” Sept. 20 and “Cure” Oct. 11.

The series will be held in Lorch Hall, and all films are in Japanese, with English subtitles. Admission to all events is free.

Series probes research responsibility

The eighth annual Research Responsibility Program (RRP) will begin in September and continue through April 1. The RRP is a series of information and discussion sessions on responsibility in the conduct and administration of research, with an emphasis on ethical analysis and problem solving.

Two introductory sessions will be held in September. The first will be 5–7 p.m. Sept. 19 at F2305 Maternal and Child Health Center. The second will be 5–7 p.m. Sept. 24 at 4448 East Hall.
