Michigan Union reaches century mark
.jpg)
A century after two students decided the campus needed a central
gathering place, the Michigan Union celebrates its 100th birthday
with an afternoon of festivities. Visitors at the Jan. 14 event took
architectural tours, applauded the ribbon-cutting for a new Opera
Lounge, and viewed scrapbooks, yearbooks and more. One item on display
was a spoon, along with a note dated Sept. 28, 1999: "To whom it may
concern, I stole this spoon in 1986. I'm sorry for that and I'd like
to return it." Here,
the candles on a giant birthday cake are lit by: Jorge Delva, assistant
professor of social work and a member of the Michigan Union Board
of Representatives (MUBR); Donna Maples, facilities coordinator for
the Michigan Union; Linda Siglin, sales and promotion coordinator
for the Major Events Office; Robbin St. Amour, financial clerk II
in the University Unions business office; Audrey Schwimmer, director
of the Michigan Union; and Ben Moerman, chair of MUBR. (Photo by
