Clements interim director named

Brian Dunnigan has been chosen by Provost Teresa Sullivan to serve as interim director of the William L. Clements Library. His appointment, made following discussion with the Board of Regents Personnel, Compensation, and Governance Committee and pending full board approval, will be effective July 1.

Dunnigan earned a Master of Arts degree in history from the University in 1973, and a Master of Arts in history museum training from the Cooperstown Graduate Programs of the State University of New York at Oneonta in 1979. He has served as the head of research and publications and curator of maps at the Clements since November 1996.

His current administrative responsibilities include assisting scholars in the use of the Clements' extensive map collection; consulting with staff and researchers on military history; and assisting the current director with development opportunities, collection enhancement and community relations.

In his previous position at the Old Fort Niagara Association, Dunnigan managed 12 full-time staff members and was responsible for all aspects of the management, operation and development of a large 17th to 20th century military historic site.

"Mr. Dunnigan has an outstanding reputation as a knowledgeable researcher and a respected leader in the special collections field," Sullivan says. "He is highly respected by the current director, curators and staff of the Clements library, members of the Clements Committee of Management and others in the field."

Current director John Dann will retire at the end of June after 30 years in the position, and following a 35 year career at the library.

"Under his care, the library has been internationally acknowledged as one of the greatest collections of American history primary source material in the world," Sullivan says.

A search advisory committee is being formed with the intention of beginning in June the international search for a new director.
