Former College of Architecture and Urban Planning Dean Robert Metcalf, pictured circa 1960-70, was honored with the President’s Award for lifetime achievement from the American Institute of Architects Michigan chapter in 1999. Metcalf also was commissioned for more than 40 architectural projects, most residential. This was due partly to the reputation he and wife Bettie created by designing and constructing their own house.  — Photo courtesy Bentley Historical Library.
