Old school: U-M in History

Octagonal house


Professor Alexander Winchell’s octagonal house, photographed in 1904 before it was razed that year, had three stories with a circular staircase running up through the middle. Its triangular corner spaces were considered perfect for closets. Kofi Annan, U.N. secretary general, addressed graduating students. He emphasized Michigan’s commitment to diversity, adding tolerance is a hallmark of human rights around the world: “These are your rights, this is your future of diversity, of pluralism and of the promise that our differences can and must be outweighed by our common humanity.” — The University Record
