Active U winners announced; more than 16,000 participate

Active U’s eighth year proved to be its most successful yet. More than 16,200 people participated, approximately 4,000 more than in previous years. Additionally, more than 30.2 million minutes of physical activity were logged during the 12-week challenge, more than any previous year.

“The enthusiasm and dedication of this year’s participants were unbelievable,” says Colleen Greene, senior wellness coordinator for MHealthy. “We set some pretty high goals for 2013 — get 15,000 people to sign up and reach 30 million exercise minutes in 12 weeks — and we achieved both. Our community really showed up, proving they can achieve anything they set their minds and bodies to do.”

Active U encourages participants to be active three or more days a week, for at least 30 minutes a day. All university faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, retirees and spouses/other qualified adults (OQA) of employees could participate as an individual or on a team.

MHealthy already has started planning for its third annual Active U Autumn, set to begin in September. However, for those who want to continue logging their exercise minutes through the summer, a Summer Activity Tracker now is available.

“We always hear how tracking activity and seeing the progress motivates people to continue exercising,” Greene says. “So we’ve kept a version of the tracker available through late summer until we begin preparing for the launch of Active U Autumn.”
