The U-M women's tennis team was selected as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team, while Lindsey Howard, Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno all were selected as ITA Scholar-Athletes. The team selection marks the seventh time the Wolverines have earned the distinction.

New social carpool network ready to go
Zimride, a new campus ride-sharing initiative, has come to U-M. Developed around the concept of a social-networking site, the online system will allow students, staff and faculty to post and search for rides, making it possible to save money on gas and reduce one’s carbon footprint with each trip.

Cultural organizations hoping for share of matching funds
Four U-M cultural organizations are among 70 groups that will participate in an Aug. 18 online fundraising challenge. Beginning at 10 a.m. that day minimum donations of $25 to the U-M Museum of Art, Exhibit Museum of Natural History, University Musical Society and the Henry Ford Estate — Fair Lane at UM-Dearborn will generate a 50-percent match from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. The matches will continue until $1 million matching fund is exhausted.

MRI doesn’t improve surgical planning for early breast cancer cases
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before breast cancer surgery increases the chances of more extensive surgery over conservative approaches, with no evidence that it improves surgical care or prognosis, according to a new review authored in part by the director of the breast oncology program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Andrew Dowdle received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1997 with his eye on Wall Street. But he always had an interest in movies, which he shared with his brother, John. One day he decided a motion picture career wasn’t the pipe dream he had assumed it must be, and decided to take his shot. Now he’s using the business acumen he developed at U-M to produce films with his brother.
