U-M professor of AOSS is named a Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year
Perry Samson, an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences who likes to describe science as “a contact sport,” has been chosen as a Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year by the President’s Council of State Universities. Samson is one of three professors given the award for exhibiting a strong, clear commitment to undergraduate education.

Graduate student teams win $10,000 in Dow sustainability challenge
The Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute has announced the winners of the 2010 Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge. Three teams of graduate students with the most innovative ideas for addressing the issue of sustainability will receive $10,000 from The Dow Chemical Co.

Sullivan appoints SPH dean search advisory committee
Provost Teresa Sullivan has named a search advisory committee to help select candidates for the next dean of the School of Public Health. The panel is to present an unranked slate of recommended candidates as early as possible in the fall term.

Field Block M vandalized at the Big House
A 6-inch by 4-foot strip of the Block M was cut from the football field at Michigan Stadium sometime over the weekend, according the Department of Public Safety.

A journey of faith
UM-Flint alumnus Christopher Paul Curtis has received more than a dozen awards for his novel “Bud, Not Buddy,” about a 10-year-old boy who flees an abusive foster family and sets out on a journey across Michigan. The story was adapted into a stage play that recently finished a two-week run at UM-Flint.
