Question of the Week

What book did you read over break?

Mary Sue Coleman, president, U-M

Book: “Brooklyn,” by Colm Toibin

“It is the tale of a young woman who emigrates from Ireland to Brooklyn, N.Y., in the early 1950s because she cannot find work in her economically depressed home country. Told in a slow and easygoing way, Eilis Lacey ultimately lets events make life choices for her.”

Alexandra Nish, U-M senior

Book: “The Road,” by Cormac McCarthy

“I’m not usually a fan of fiction, but this is the best piece of literature I’ve read since high school.”

Matthew Hull, assistant professor, anthropology

Book: “Matter,” by Iain Banks

“It is a really though-provoking science fiction book.”
