After graduating from U-M in 1960, he worked as a journalist until 1966 when he joined the University Relations Department at UM-Flint, where he worked for 22 years. By the time he left in 1988, he had been named vice chancellor for university relations. He completed his career leading the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce for 14 years. He also served in many community leadership positions over the years, such as serving on the board of directors of the Salvation Army, a trustee of Alpena Regional Medical Center and head volunteer of the Boy Scouts. McElroy, known as Mac to his friends, was an avid outdoorsman.

Funeral services were held Dec. 3. Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Michigan (ALS division) or the Huron Humane Society, through McWilliams Funeral Home in Alpena, Mich., or directly to the charity.
